Dragon Pearl Junk

Factsheets

Launched in May  2010, the Dragon’s Pearl Junk  was designed with adventure in mind. With 11 cabins.

The newest and the largest of the Indochina Junk family, the three Dragon’s Pearl are modelled on the traditional Chinese junks that used to sail these waters.

Whether you are dinning in the restaurant, lounging on one of the two sundecks or relaxing in the comfort of your cabin, you will be surrounded by the handcrafted teak and oak that make the Dragon’s Pearl wonderful sailing vessels

This classic junk is ideal for parties for larger groups (up to 20 people) or even incentive groups. Alternatively book a berth and get to meet new friends as you cruise the bay.

We really enjoyed our 2 day 1 night cruise with a beautiful cabin and wonderful food. Only thing to be aware of is that with Hanoi transfers the actual cruise is only about 22hrs not 2 days. Indochina own their own island with a man-made beach that is beautiful. Would highly recommend Indochina Junks, worth the money!

We booked a 2d / 1n cruise on the Red Dragon 2 and could not fault anything in the experience. We travelled with our 11 month old daughter and had requested a baby cot, however when we arrived on the boat it turned out the information had not been passed on the our tour leader, Son. This was no problem and few minutes later a coat arrived by boat. It also turned out there was a spare cabin on the boat (as they only take a maximum of 10 guests) - we were given the option of either our daughter sleeping in one cabin and us in the other, or to store our luggage in the spare cabin and give more space in ours (which we did) - again, nothing was a problem for the crew. From the moment you step on board, the experience is excellent. The food was fantastic and the service was warm yet professional. The cabins are lovely and the shower / bathroom is very good with a seperate enclosed shower rather than everything combined in one small space. Also, having a small group (10 persons max) meant the crew and the tour leader really got to know you and ensure you were looked after. Our tour leader, Son, was brilliant and made sure everyone had an enjoyable time. The activities included a visit to a cave on one of the islands, eating, kayaking around some of the islands, eating, a visit to a fishing village and pearl farm, eating, swimming, eating .... good thing the food was fantastic. We would recomend Indochina Junk, and in particular the junk and crew of Red Dragon 2, to anyone.

I travelled on the Dragon’s Pearl in October and though that the Junk experience was awesome. A lot has already been said by other reviewers, but the highlights are clean private rooms with A/C, private washrooms and really good food! The company tries to set itself apart by funding local initiatives to help people who live there and by owning the rights to where they travel. In theory, your trip is supposed to be less commercialized although based on the number of ships in the bay (before you set out), it seems like there wouldn’t be a huge difference since there are a LOT of Indochina junks. You will have a choice in junks ranging from small (Prince), medium (Red Dragon) or large (Dragon’s Pearl). The Dragon’s Pearl caps out at about 20 guests while the Red Dragon has about half of that. As explained to me by my hotel in Hanoi, the Red Dragon is probably the nicest as it is the newest. However, after staying at the Dragon’s Pearl it is clear that the boat itself is much bigger and there is way more public relaxation space up top. Another key differentiation is that you go to a cave dinner with the Pearl and a Beach dinner with the Red Dragon. After doing the 3D/2N trip, I would say that it properly does the area justice. The 2D/1N trip is also popular but I honestly do not think it is enough time to appreciate the sights. Accounting for transit time and meals I think you want the extra time to relax up top and really take in the environment. As a tip, I am pretty sure that it is cheaper to book through a tour guide operator than the website directly. It seems kind of counter-intuitive, but the price quoted to me by the website seemed quite high relative to the total cost I paid to my tour guide company. Also, for the Dragon’s Pearl, the best cabins are the ones on the top floor at the back as nobody can look inside your window and you have the best view (in my opinion).

If you are choosing a 3 day/2night cruise on Halong Bay, Indochina Junk will not disappoint. We look the Dragon's Pearl I cruise because we wanted to be with a few other fellow travelers (but not too many :) these boats will take you to the less crowded parts of Halong bay. We found that while it was not the cheapest cruise, it was definitely worth it.... it lived up to our expectations. We felt like royalty. The only thing we would have liked to change is to have less of the amazing food they served us and more time spent at some of the secluded beaches. We would definitely recommend this experience to our friends as others have recommeded it to us

Did the 3 day/ 2 night trip on Dragon Pearl 2. Highly recommend this company/junk. Itinerary was great (especially dinner in cave!). Crew including the guide were friendly, courteous and helpful. Boat was of a high standard in all respects - meal quality was excellent and portions were generous. All went very smoothly in all aspects so very happy to give high recommendation.
